Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations impacting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend floated over the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become not financially viable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
