Approximately fifty cars have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postal boxes were marked, in some cases with swastikas, they announced in a official communication.
Law enforcement state they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a man observed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish liquid.
The substance had been drawn in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Law enforcement then found many other marked automobiles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under legislation banning the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Officials report early analysis show the substance was most likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no clue as to where it came from; authorities are not yet informed of any injuries in relation with the event," they commented.
Municipal representatives announced they were trying "to unravel the incident" and have asked to the public for details.
An important political figure stated the vandalism rendered him speechless and needed to be resolved rapidly.
"This event affects the center of Hanau and revives the wounds of the extremist attack half a decade ago," he wrote on a platform, referring to the death of nine victims by a gunman targeting individuals of immigrant origin in 2020.
