Donald Trump's Regime of Punishment and Favor

Trump's intense appetite for revenge has rapidly transformed into a methodical system. Over the past year, the leader's fury and whims have assumed the guise of administrative measures in ways analogous to past repressive governments. Justice department figures who do not cooperate are promptly dismissed and replaced by devotees. Critical leaders who question him encounter prosecution, trial and penalties. Adversaries have been designated under executive memoranda as “anti-American”, “opposed to religious values” and “opposing economic freedom”, and threatened with criminal charges as “extremists”.

Government Institutions Transformed

Each instance involving prosecution of critics and protection for his allies demonstrates its own distinct qualities. However, regardless of their individual form, they embody manifestations of what has arisen as a deliberate technique. Such episodes are not isolated. His purge of Department of Justice prosecutors and FBI officials, accompanied by his appointment of loyalists in key posts, commenced rapidly, soon took on a pattern, and has now been formed into a system. Federal prosecutors and the FBI have been transformed into partisan agencies under the president's clear direction to carry out his wishes. Injustice has been turned into normal. It represents the system of punishment.

Management is preoccupied with targeting the leader's perceived adversaries than they are with protecting our country's safety.

Inside the Structure

The origin of this system has been exposed in the court filing of multiple ex- senior FBI agents filed in the ninth month in the US district court in the capital against top official an administration figure and attorney general Pam Bondi for wrongful dismissal in “a effort of retribution against the officials for what Defendants deemed to be a refusal to show adequate political loyalty”. According to the filing that one official, the ex- interim leader, describes a discussion in which the director “openly confessed the illegality of his behavior”.

The official had tried to defend agency personnel from being dismissed, the filing alleges. The director advised him that “White House figures” – interpreted by the official to be the presidential administration and justice department – had directed him to remove anyone who they determined as having been involved in a legal probe against Trump. The document continues: “He clarified that he had to dismiss the individuals his superiors told him to dismiss, because his capacity to keep his own position was contingent on the dismissal of the officials who worked on matters involving the leader. The director commented that there was no option he or the official could do to stop these or any other firings, because ‘the agency attempted to put the leader in prison and he remembers.’” After he informed Patel he was breaking the agency's own internal rules, Patel supposedly said “he recognized that and he was aware the character of the summary firings were likely unlawful”.

Broad Consequences

Following his reported admission to Driscoll, the justice department and the law enforcement agency have been weakened and reorganized for his system of punishment. Several of the bureau's top officials were terminated or pushed out in the first days of the administration. Approximately thousands of lawyers at the department have agreed to a “deferred resignation program”. A minimum of several federal prosecutors, including those in the New York office, stepped down in objection over what they regarded as political interference in abandoning the legal action against the New York City mayor, a political figure, in return for his assistance with his Immigration and Customs Enforcement roundups of migrants. The anti-corruption unit of the justice department, which handles corruption cases, has been diminished to a handful of lawyers. The equality section has been devastated: 70% of its employees has left. 33% of senior leaders at DoJ have left. The unit enforcing ecological regulations has experienced the exit of half its management.

Incentives and Penalties

Regarding the mayor's situation, the interim prosecutor for the southern district of New York, the official, stepped down in protest against what she described as the “quid pro quo”. A key figure, his “border czar,” was present as the implementer with the mayor on Fox News to announce: “Unless he complies, I will return in New York City.”. Additionally, another figure, previously the acting deputy attorney general and a former Trump attorney, who brokered the arrangement, was given an appellate federal judgeship, a likely stepping stone to the supreme court.

His protection for crimes committed while in power, granted by the remarkable decision of the GOP-led on the highest court, thus thwarting his prosecution over the Capitol riot and preserving his public standing for the presidential race, is the cornerstone on which he stands to defend his stalwarts. Under these circumstances, he has been empowered to authorize wrongdoing. The effect of the court judgment infuses his presidency and the GOP down to its bones. Trump v United States has escalated. Similar to Richard Nixon's legal adviser the figure remarked about the Watergate
