Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research suggests that patients who stop using blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing these drugs need to be informed of the potential of rapid weight regain when the therapy concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery means a return to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually see a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

The NHS advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if something flipping and you're instantly ravenous," said a patient.

This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success likely depends on combined lifestyle management.
