Tetris Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Whenever a major honors show draws close, one notices a demand to include fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts with niche passions.

My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Which classification works between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything that year
  • Another creative title received no nominations during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're small games, however the design in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and engaging across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Puzzle game makers are working at the hard edge game development, producing among the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
