The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.
The former head of state was found guilty of planning a military coup in the ninth month and handed more than 27 years in incarceration, but he remained under home detention pending court reviews.
High Court Judge the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a safety action after recent developments came to light.
This included seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a chance to flee".
Court Filing Details Escape Risks
In a filing authorising the detention, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's aim to disable the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his escape.
This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his child.
His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a senator, called for a meeting of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or see it all from your mobile device there on your settee? I call on you to fight with us."
He said the gathering would be so followers could offer prayers for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the judge's ruling was the potential of the former president's move to diplomatic missions near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a history of planning to request asylum through a embassy office", a statement said.
The legal document underscores that the US embassy in the federal district, the capital city, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.
International Reactions
His judicial problems have drawn the ire of fellow conservative nationalist United States President Trump, prompting him to enact a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.
Bolsonaro is being kept in a national police facility in Brasilia and will have a detention review on the next day.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with tracking devices.
They also asked that the former president be permitted to leave his home for healthcare, saying he required ongoing care for lung conditions and other health problems.
Details of Guilty Verdict
Bolsonaro was found guilty of leading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the national vote to his ideological adversary, Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a scheme which involved plans to kill Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been managing the former president's case.
The scheme was thwarted because it failed to get the support of the army and air force commanders. His successor was inaugurated without problem on the first day of 2023.
But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged government buildings in the national capital, Brasília.
The security forces intervened and around 1,500 people were arrested.
The justices found that the protesters had been incited by him whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, reestablish control and return him to office.
At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also banned from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.
The one-time head of state called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him competing in the 2026 presidential election.
